Jesus Revealed in the Storm

Written by Diane Jones

When I was a child, my cousin spent a night with us. A  thunderstorm storm came up, and he was terrified. We had no basement. No reassurance by my mother could settled him. He had been taught to fear storms; to cower in a basement at the sound of rain. How better to learn about faith in our Great God who will protect us in storms. Unfortunately, we must go through the object lesson of the storm to strengthen our faith.

Videos of sea storms are scary. Huge boats rock from side to side, struggling to stay upright. Enormous waves reach high levels. Darkness makes the storms even more frightening.

In Matthew 14:22, Jesus walks into the mid sea during a raging storm. That picture is awesome. His feet are on firm foundation. The waves do not touch Him. He is light in the darkness.

The fishing boat which Jesus passes is bouncing front to back and side ways.  Men are hanging on for dear life to the boat sides. Waves clap over their head. Yet, He is still  able to walk by, stop, and to talk with distressed fishermen. Like parting a sea! I am reminded of God’s supernatural control of nature twice recorded in the Old Testament. Remember the The Red Sea and an overflowing Jordan river parting. Jesus Reveals His omnipotence!

Listen to the One standing in the storm saying, ” Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

Jesus Reveals His Sovereignty over crisis.

Consider someone so amazing, that a mere fisherman would desire to give up the boat’s security and say, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” What? Give up the only hope of survival!

Jesus Reveals Security greater than any life boat.

Picture a Savior, saying “Come.” Although not recorded, I sense He is saying, “Come to me in this storm. Come with your fears and doubts. I will rescue you. You are safe when I am with you.”

Peter walks on water. We are not told how many steps before the wind intimidated him and he begins to sink. I always pictured him ankle deep, than waist deep. My view may not have been correct. One either walks on water or plunges into a raging sea if unable to swim in one’s own power.

But, Jesus immediately reaches out His hand and grabs Peter after he cries out for salvation from potential drowning. Jesus’ arm is not to short to save.

Jesus Reveals grace for a man with only a little faith.

We are not told if Jesus glided Peter in the storm waters  back to the boat. Or did Peter walk back to the boat with Jesus holding on to Him?

Jesus is with us in this 2020 storm. He is with us in this storm. He will glide us through, or pull us to our feet to walk on water with Him. He will hold on to us. We will be stronger and bolder.

Jesus Reveals that He Truly is the Son of God.
