DESCRIPTION:Join us at Peoria Nazarene Church for our weekly worship gathering Sunday at 10:30 AM. Busy bags that go along with the sermon are available for kids at the welcome center each week. Our Kids will also be helping lead worship by singing a Christmas Song! \nOn this\, the last Sunday of Advent\, we begin to transition from longing and waiting to looking for the nativity story. We expect shepherds in fields\, keeping watch over their flocks by night. We expect innkeepers with stables full of soft\, sweet-smelling hay. We expect a pregnant Mary on the brink of delivering her child. And we have come to anticipate it all wrapped in wonder\, beauty\, and nostalgic simplicity. Most of our nativity scenes are clean and crisp: angelic faces\, resting animals\, a clean stable.  Even “Away in a Manger” claims the baby Jesus did not cry! Our familiarity with this story often sanitizes it\, removing the messy humanity of it\, like the fluids at birth\, the swollen feet that come with third-trimester pregnancy\, and the general noise and messiness. \nWe also tend to sanitize the family dynamics Jesus was born into. Matthew 1\, however\, is not a narrative of shepherds in the field or sweet-smelling hay. It’s not a sanitized narrative at all. In fact\, it plunges us right into the messy family dynamics Jesus was born into. A betrothed and supposed virgin ends up pregnant\, and the man she is engaged to finds out. This is a mess in a culture and religion that allows for the stoning of adulteresses. This is a difficult place for a man who is filled with love and compassion but also righteousness and dedication to his faith. In this mess\, on this last Sunday of Advent\, we reflect on love. \nMaybe\, despite our nostalgic feelings toward the shepherds and angels of Luke 2\, this is the perfect. passage for us to talk about the love of God so great that he not only entered the world in a stable but also entered into the humanness of messy family dynamics.

Busy bags that go along with the sermon are available for kids at the welcome center each week. \nWhenever Christians talk about patience\, someone often declares\, “Don’t pray for patience\, or else God will give you situations to practice patience!” People say this earnestly because many of us are not people of patience. We like two-day shipping and high-speed internet and fast food. We do not like to wait. So when we are confronted with a passage about patience\, we might want to jump past the text\, especially when it talks about being patient in suffering\, and not grumbling. How many of us have grumbled while waiting in line for something that was taking a little too long on a stressful Monday morning? If this doesn’t feel a bit convicting for most of us already\, this passage falls on the Sunday of Advent when we celebrate joy! Even the Advent candle color changes to pink to represent that suffering isn’t going to last and that joy is coming. It feels almost contradictory to have a passage about patience in suffering without grumbling against our brothers and sisters during the week when we are celebrating joy. \nThe question is before us: Can we have joy in the midst of patient suffering? We struggle with inconvenient moments in our fast-paced world\, but what about when we are faced with true suffering? What about when there are famines and persecution\, like what the early church faced? What about when we face pandemics and the loss of loved ones? Is there a way to be patient in the midst of that suffering? Is there space for joy\, even there?

Busy bags that go along with the sermon are available for kids at the welcome center each week. \nIn our contentious world of violence and discord\, peace might seem like a fairy tale\, especially the type of peace that gives us one voice and one mind\, as Paul says in this Romans text. This seems impossible given the current state of things\, where everything feels fragile or torn and conflict seems to reside just under the surface. But today is the Sunday in Advent when we light the peace candle and reflect on the peace of Christ and the possibility for peace in our world. We are left with questions about peace: Is peace possible? And is peace the absence of conflict\, or is it something else entirely? \nRomans 15 lays out instructions on how we ought to live with one another. Those who are strong bear with the failings of the weak. We care for our neighbors. We are to have the same attitude as Christ toward one another. These line up well with an idea of living at peace with others. But the. foundation of peace—this foundation of learning to live in community with one another—isn’t a removal of conflict\, never approaching difficult topics or conversations\, never having hard words with each other. Instead\, the foundation is Christ. Aligning one’s attitude with Christ is what brings about one mind and one voice with which to glorify God. \nThis season is one when we talk about peace on earth often\, but if Romans 15 is any indication\, then it is true what the songwriters say about peace beginning with us. This isn’t about winning an argument or avoiding an argument but about what it means to build a foundation on Christ that ultimately leads to one mind and one voice with those around us.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Peoria Nazarene Church for our weekly worship gathering Sunday at 10:30 AM. Busy bags that go along with the sermon are available for kids at the welcome center each week. \nAdvent is the season of the dawn. The light is coming\, we can see glimpses of pink and orange along the horizon\, but the sun isn’t up yet. There are still long stretches of shadow and places of darkness. The noises of the day are barely audible as everything from animals to infants begin to rouse. Advent is the season of the dawn\, where we live in the space between the darkness of a world without Christ and the light of a world with Christ; where we see the light coming\, yet it hasn’t fully come. \nWhile we observe this season of Christ’s birth\, the coming of light\, we are also reminded that we are still Advent people\, living in the glow of the dawn. We no longer are people of the darkness\, we are people of the light\, even while Christ’s return is still before us. Romans 13 reminds us\, “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.” We are called and reminded that we are Advent people—people of the dawn. We live in the reality that the kingdom of God is now\, yet is still to come in its fulfillment. \nOn the first Sunday of Advent we light the candle of hope\, a reminder of the hope we have in Christ coming in a stable so long ago\, but also a reminder of the hope we have that Christ will come again. It’s a reminder that we are people of light in a world that is still so often cloaked in darkness. And we are called to live\, to love\, to serve\, to celebrate\, to mourn\, and to grieve—all in the light of hope. The light has come\, and the light is coming.

You are invited to join us at Peoria Nazarene Church this Good Friday to see the love of God displayed on the Cross of Christ. There is no greater display of God’s love for all people than his voluntary participation in our sufferings. \nThis year we invite you to allow Christ to meet you in the middle of your sufferings and the areas of your life that are not yet as they one day will be. God is for us – He loves us and never turns us away when we come to Him in faith! \nThe gathering will include a progression of lights and candles being extinguished to remind us of the death of Christ. Pastor Mark will share a message called\, “Perspectives from the Cross\,” about the two criminals and Christ on the cross. The service will also include an invitation for all to share in the Lord’s Supper. \nWe hope you join us for this meaningful service. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Peoria Nazarene Church for Palm Sunday in person and online!\nThis Palm Sunday you are invited to join us for a worship gathering to celebrate Christ the King! Palm Sunday invites us to not only celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem marking the beginning of Holy Week\, but also to remember the mission of God to the world. \nPalm branches will be given out to everyone as a symbol to remind us of the triumphal entry of Christ the King into Jerusalem for the final time before his death. Children are invited to help lead us in worship by waving palm branches in the air (parents are welcome to help). Kids will be dismissed during the welcome to receive instruction from our Children’s Ministry team and then will help us as we sing\, “Hosanna”. Before the message kids are dismissed to participate in our children’s ministry worship in age appropriate environments. Parents are also welcome to keep their kids with them in worship if so desired. Stop by the welcome center when you arrive to register or check-in your kids. \nPastor Mark will be preaching a message called\, “The Mission of God\,” from John 17. The crowds that gathered as Jesus entered Jerusalem before his death misunderstood the real mission of God and why He came. Jesus prays the night before his death for his disciples and for us as he embraces fully the mission of God and sends us out to participate in His mission. \nDon’t miss this special worship gathering as we begin Holy Week together! Jesus is King!
